MEETING THE
NEEDS OF SENIORS
As the sole caregiver for my disabled mother for over thirty years, I am familiar with the challenges seniors face everyday. Isolation, an unaffordable housing market, transportation, overwhelming medical needs and elder exploitation or worse, abuse.
When I knock doors, I am meeting residents who are worried about their future. Between the rising cost of healthcare and the vulnerability of programs such as the Medicare Savings Program, they are unsure about who is looking out for their best interests. I was proud to stand up for preserving the Medicare Saving Program these past six years and I will continue to champion this program.
Geriatric health services are increasing in demand, including assisted living and nursing facilities and home health care. In Connecticut, we have a long way to go to offer quality long-term support and services for older adults in relation to affordability, access and quality of life. The cost of keeping seniors in their homes is increasingly unaffordable and families like mine, have fewer and fewer options. This past year I've been working on a Hospice Home Care Ombudsman Working Group that has been working towards creating an avenue for hearing the consumer and patient voice in the growing home care field.
Nursing homes have been a priority for policy making throughout the pandemic and sadly many of us have lost loved ones due to COVID-19 ravaging through the community settings. In 2021, we passed a law that allows residents to use virtual monitoring and virtual visitation technology. We've also increased reimbursement based on acuity and reduced co-payments for the Connecticut Home Care Program for Elders.
These past several years we've focused on improving care for patients with Alzheimer’s disease, dementia and more. We've increased support for our most vulnerable and provided tax relief to property owners. We expanded senior protections to protect crimes against the elderly and individuals with disabilities.
As you can see we are focused on passing laws that protect our seniors well-being. I encourage you to reach out to me with the issues that you care about and let's work on them together.
